CHAPTER TEN

The Lost City

The chamber was bathed in a gentle yellow light. She wasn’t alone. There were people standing all around. The space was smaller than the inside of the tree, but still large enough that the group was not crowding each other. There was a sound like when the city bus opens its doors, and white light invaded the yellow glow. The doorway opened, and everyone moved as one. Jade remained rooted to the spot. She tried to peer into the white light, but could see nothing. She wanted to move, but she was also afraid. Beyond that white opening lay a land and a people she knew nothing about. Their expectations of her would be very high. She felt if she moved from that spot, everything in her would change.

Everyone else had gone through the door except Mr. Tucker. He stood next to her smiling in his gentle way. The doors began to close just as two people pushed through and then stood looking at Jade and Mr. Tucker. Jade’s eyes flew to the doorway, but indecision stayed her feet. She knew she should go through the doorway, could feel Mr. Tucker urging her to go, but she wanted to just stand still for a few minutes longer. The decision was made for her. The door was shut. She continued to stand still, feeling her feet rooted to the spot. Jade was barely breathing. Mr. Tucker and the two people disappeared. They were there one second and gone the next. Someone flickered into the room. Then another. Then another. Then Marcus. Then Aquila. Then Claire and Michael. The room filled again with people. This time with folks she knew. She reached for Marcus’ hand and twined her fingers in his. Marcus’ jolt of surprise made them both jump. He glanced down at her, and everything about him settled. Aquila moved to the other side of her. She acknowledged him with a nod of acceptance. Claire smiled at her from Michael’s side. The door opened again.

This time when the people moved, Jade did too. Marcus released her hand just as they exited the chamber. She still felt her connection to him and the calmness he gave her. He stepped directly behind her and she felt his presence like a wall at her back. Aquila remained by her side but stopped when she did.

The walls of the corridor they stepped into were crystal clear, and the ocean surrounded her. Sea creatures of every kind could be seen going about their lives on all sides. The floor appeared to be like crushed coral. There was a slight current in the air, but it was not cold.

“We’re under the ocean?” she asked of no one in particular.

It was Aquila who answered. “Yes. Antartica to be exact.”

“Antartica? Where is all the ice?”

Aquila pointed to the ceiling, if it could be called that. The crystal display of ice formations above her was nothing short of spectacular. Jade reached out a hand to the walls around her.
